David Bowden | Dan Brown: NOMAD
David Bowden | Dan Brown: NOMAD
Sat 22 Mar, 7.30-9.30pm
St Bride's Centre, Dalry
Inspired by Glasgow’s evolving music scene, as well as the vast vistas of the Scottish Highlands, Dan Brown’s writing is musically ‘nomadic’, blurring and blending the lines between genres, merging an eclectic mix of indie folk, ambient electronica, jazz and traditional Celtic music to create a distinctive sound of warm timbres and textures, with strong melodies tinged with nostalgia. NOMAD features Laura Wilkie (fiddle), Juliette Lemoine (cello), Chris Amer (guitar), Gregor Black (drums and bodhran) and Tom Gibbs (piano and clarinet).
Opening the evening, award-winning Scottish bass player David Bowden plays a solo set, highlighting the lyrical capabilities of the double bass while drawing from a wide-ranging musical palette. Expect an exploration of uplifting melodies and expressive improvisation.
WHAT THE TEAM SAY...
"I only have two solo bass albums in my record collection, Dave Holland’s Emerald Tears and Larry Grenadier’s The Gleaners. No matter the dynamic there’s a beautiful fragility to the sound of solo double bass, something that draws the ear in, makes you listen closer. I’m hoping David’s set will challenge your perceptions of the instrument in the same way.
I’ve had NOMAD on heavy rotation since it was released and jumped at the opportunity to present it live. NOMAD feels like the work of an artist with a deep and fully formed compositional voice—remarkable given how early on Dan is on his musical journey. There’s a richness to his writing, a sense of space and storytelling that makes his music feel lived-in. I’m looking forward to hearing how this translates live. If the record is anything to go by, it’s going to be something special." Gerard
