He made his EJBF debut as part of our 2021 Introducing Stage, and pianist Ben Shankland continues to make a name on the Scottish jazz scene. His compositions show much influence from traditional recordings, but bring a fresh contemporary jazz sound. The young Edinburgh-born pianist and composer is joined by two of Scotland’s finest young musicians - Chun-Wei Kang on drums and Ewan Hastie on bass.
Brian Molley’s lush and lyrical saxophone tones are highlighted by his vibrant compositions that cover the gamut from reflective to ebullient. Vivacious solos soar above infectious rhythms, powering music which subtly reinvents the tradition. He is joined by his talented quartet of Tom Gibbs (piano), Mario Caribe (double bass) and Stu Brown (drums) to perform music from their new album ‘Modern Traditions’. This is a group at their peak of their powers brimming with virtuosity, whether playing a tender ballad or spirited jazz.
